Chemotherapy made safe
The idea of offering chemotherapy within a general practice setting can seem daunting. There are regulatory, safety, and logistical concerns that must be tackled. Keeping up with the current and ever-changing chemotherapy treatment recommendations is also a challenge.
The practice of administering chemotherapy is regulated by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH website) and regulations are published in the USP 800 guidelines (LINK). Current guidelines require practices to build a dedicated negative pressure chemotherapy storage and handling room, maintain exteriorly vented chemotherapy specific hoods, use closed delivery drug systems, and stock appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to be in compliance with USP guidelines for safe chemotherapy handling for patients and staff. Failure to adhere to these guidelines increases a veterinary practice's liability and the risk to receive fines and lawsuits.
